Explorer 16 Victorian Championships 2022 - Results
These were held on the weekend of 5-6 March at Lake Wellington Yacht Club on the Gippsland Lakes. After a downpour on Saturday morning, the weather cleared and we were able to get in three races in the afternoon, in light breeze under a cloudy sky, until the wind died. The forecast for Sunday was for winds of 15-20 knots, which proved correct with a nasty onshore chop breaking over the launching ramp breakwater. A poll of skippers was conducted and the majority verdict was to abandon racing, and minimise possible breakage of crew and boats. Three races out of a possible five constitutes the minimum for the series, but gave us a clear result. In accordance with the NOR, awards are made for first and second in both Line Honours and Handicap placings, and trophies will be presented at the 2022 AGM.
Congratulations to LWYC's Kylie Wright and crew Bruce James, who sailed UpWright to Line Honours first place. George Giuliani and crew Glen Wilson took out second place in Kalang.
First Handicap was Peter Mart and crew Rob Taylor sailing Meander, closely followed by Frank Strickland and crew Dale Ingleton sailing Emily.
We extend our thanks to the numerous Lake Wellington Yacht Club volunteers both on and off the water, who conducted the races, manned the rescue boats, timed the finishes and collated results, and provided food and refreshments over the weekend. The friendly hospitality made for a great weekend. We enjoyed the LWYC amenities, camping or the bunkhouse, a sumptuous BBQ dinner on Saturday night and egg & bacon rolls and lunch on Sunday morning as we packed up prior to departing.
Particular thanks to LWYC Sailing Captain Andrew McColl who organised the racing and provided the excellent video accompanying this post.
