Explorer 16 Championship 2021 Results

The 2020-2021 Explorer 16 Championships were held February 20-21 on Lake Mulwala hosted by Yarrawonga Yacht Club. In very light to non-existent breeze, five races were held over two days (3 Saturday, 2 Sunday) in temperatures in the mid-30's. The Hartley TS16 Association also held their Championships, starting 3 minutes before the Explorers. There was extremely close racing between the first two Explorers, with the lead changing multiple times in each race. Competition was more variable between the remaining three Explorers, with all at various times falling into wind holes.

Congratulations to Line Honours winner Ric Lamont and crew Alex Stroud in Captain Phasma, and to Handicap winner Sue Burke and crew Jude Blackwood in Swallow. As there were only five entrants, trophies will only be awarded for first Outright and first Handicap in accordance with the NOR.

Ric and Alex

As in 2019, Yarrawonga Yacht Club were friendly and hospitable hosts, and we enjoyed their amenities, camping, a great dinner on Saturday night, and all had a most enjoyable weekend.

Congratulations to all competitors, a big thank you to the many YYC committee, members and volunteers who made the weekend a success, and to the Hartley TS16 Association for allowing us to join with their Championships. Two YYC members also crewed all weekend for two of the Explorers, which assisted getting boats on the water.

NOTE: COVID-19 border restrictions are currently in place, and can change rapidly.

Current (Jan 15) advice is that:

  1. Victorians from outside the Cross Border community may sail on Lake Mulwala as long as they don’t step onto the NSW (ie. northern) shore,
  2. NSW people from outside the Cross Border community may not cross into Victoria without a relevant permit.

However, it is an entrant's responsibility to ascertain the restrictions in place on the Championship dates.
