Explorer 16 Association Championships

The Explorer 16 Association 2011-2012 Victorian Championships will be held at the Williamstown Sailing Club on the 11-12th of February 2012.

The Championship is open to all Association members and is a great opportunity to combine the social and competitive fun of sailing Botterill Explorers.

If you are an Explorer owner and would like to participate in cruising and/or racing activities such as the upcoming Championships, it's not too late to join the Association at the very moderate Annual Subscription cost of $36 for Senior Members and $12 for Junior Members (Under 18 years).

Lake Eppalock Weekend - 25-27 NOV 2011

The water is back at Lake Eppalock and so were the Exporer16’s, a great weekend was had by all who attended.

We stayed at a Camp which overlooked the waters of Lowhead Inlet, the Camp was extremely comfortable and we all enjoyed a relaxing and social weekend of food, drink and of course some sailing.

Members started arriving on Friday afternoon and by Saturday we had 7 boats and over 16 people which was a great sign of the rejuvenation of the Association.

Water was the reason that the boats were back at the Lake and water was the reason that threatened to keep us on land when the rains came on Saturday.

We had been invited to join the Bendigo Yacht Club Race Day and 4 Explorers of the Association took to the water and raced in the two events. We appreciated the hospitality of the Bendigo Yacht Club as it added to the overall success of the weekend.
Race Day was extremely wet, especially at the end when the retrieval of boats was done under torrential rain.

The Association was well represented with “Swallow” showing how it should be done under the helm of Sue and Trevor, Frank and Ali kept “Rachel” on course and Mario was finally able to convince members that he really did have an Explorer when he sailed with Ron on his remarkably presented boat “Scallywag”.
Jack was going to sail with Peter on "Meander" but kindly stood aside to allow Ray C to learn from Peter’s experience.

Saturday Night was another eating experience with members enjoying the facilities of the Camp, table tennis and snooker kept the boys amused while the girls sat in front of the fire and watched DVD’s.

Sunday was sunny and all 7 boats took to the water for a short sail on the lake before packing up and heading home, completing an enjoyable weekend at Lake Eppalock.

2011-2012 Sailing Seasons opens at Williamstown

The Explorer 16 Association Meeting was held at the Williamstown Sailing Club on Saturday 08/10/11. It is a great venue and members and friends took to the water after the meetings to join in the first race of the WSC season.

We were pleased to see our new members attend and also compete in the race alongside the WSC fleet. We thank the Williamstown Sailing Club for the use of their facilities.

We have confirmed some of the 2011-2012 Season Activities and full details of these will be published in the next Newsletter, a brief description can be seen on this site.

Explorer16 Association Open Day

The Explorer16 Association 2011-2012 sailing season has started with an Open Day held at Safety Beach VIC on Saturday & Sunday 24/25 September.
Members were able to get together to enjoy a BBQ and to welcome Ray M, our newest member.

Ray and his mate David, brought along their Explorer, the boat carries sail number 69 and it was great to welcome Ray and also to welcome back 69, as this boat was a previous member of the Association in years past.

The ever eager Frank S was up early on Saturday morning and launched early, getting in a quick sail before enjoying a BBQ lunch.

The hospitality of Ron & Loris S was again greatly appreciated with Explorers lined up along the street where members took interest in each other boats and set-ups. There was a lot of interest in "Old Salt 53" as this boat has an "anchor well" formed in the deck. Pictures and measurements were taken and due to the interest, there may soon be other boats with a similar set-up.

A drawing of the template for the hatch cut-out is available for interested members of the Association.

The Explorer 16, a small trailable yacht of 5.05 m (16 feet) length and 2.13 mm beam, was designed by the Botterill boat-building family in the late 1960s for production in fibreglass. Since then about 150 of the cabin model have been produced. There have also been 11 of an open day-sailer version, and 10 of a 21 foot trailable yacht designed on the same principles. The Explorer 16 has an enclosed cabin with two bunks, and carries a mainsail, genoa (or working jib) and optional spinnaker. The dimensions of an Explorer 16 (5.0m long and 2.13m wide) means it sits well on a single-axle trailer and with an all-up weight of about 780 kg, can be towed by cars with engines of 2.0 litre or more. The class rules have always maintained the one-design principle, so that although some enhancements are permitted, the concept of economical family sailing has been continued to this day.

The Explorer 16 Association has supported Explorer 16 owners and enthusiasts since 1977, and welcomes all owners of Explorer yachts to join them for sailing and social purposes, and to obtain the best information and advice available on all aspects of Explorer sailing. An annual Victorian Championship commenced in 1979 and has been held every year since. Racing, cruising and social events are also held throughout the year.
